"In his new artistic series, painter Marius Burhan confronts the moral decay of the public sphere with clarity and biting satire, employing the metaphor of the "political rat" as a symbol of opportunism, manipulation, and civic indifference. His project draws inspiration from Albert Camus's novel The Plague, in which the epidemic serves as a powerful allegory for moral evil—one that spreads silently yet devastatingly through a community unprepared to recognize it.
In Burhan's vision, Camus's city of Oran becomes a parallel to contemporary society: an enclosed space where institutions, convictions, and solidarity are tested by the emergence of a moral "contagion." Just as the rats in the novel foreshadow a disorder that is initially ignored, the "political rat" symbolizes those ethical failures that proliferate wherever vigilance weakens and silent complicity becomes the norm.
